November 29, 2006

This week, I have decorated seven Christmas trees. Tomorrow, I will do five more. make that seven more.  And I haven't even started my own house decorating yet! You'd think I would be burned out...transforming the church atrium and then transforming our home. But, really, I can't get enough of Christmas decorating! Each year, I think I will do less and add more. Each year, another little space gets another little something special.

This weekend, I will unwrap a cupboard full of vintage ornaments, Ornaments_1   and  boxes of glass beads and balls, ropes of antique silver tinsel garland.  I treasure each one of them, and it's not until  they are all in place, a jumble of generations and eras,  that they whisper Christmas.  Each shiny bauble and

tarnished Shiny Brite  Ornaments_2  tell a story of Christmas past, and I long to have been there to see with my own eyes the magnificent trees draped in special treasures.  I have some ornaments from my own childhood...some from my mother's old collection, some from JR's grandmother ...and of course, the ornaments of my own children's school-aged creations.

And they all seem to fit together to create that magic that most

of us can connect with.... Ornaments_3_1

From 1910 to 1960,  1990 to today.

Poland, Germany, Czechoslovakia and United States ....

But, here's what I want to know....tinsel or no tinsel?

November 27, 2006

See how I spent my weekend?

The wild socks are on the needles....Nashua "Julia" is my favorite yarn this week....and I can't stop knitting these knee socks!

100_5923_1

Funny how things come full circle.  On Saturday,  I got a great package from Sharon, to celebrate a "Pay it Forward" thing she was doing. (Sharon and I actually met in July during my vacation in Michigan) I was the lucky recipient of two hunky skeins of Manos wool....

100_5926

And you all have "Payed it Forward" with this boatload of mittens this week...

100_5925

And on Sunday, we visited Ben at Freedom Village. And what do you suppose the message was about in the service?  Paying it Forward....leaving no debt of love, caring, help or compassion left unpaid. No kidding... the pastor actually talked about the movie,
"Pay it Forward!"   And so, this week, one of you will get a surprise from me. I'm not sure who, or how or what, but it's my turn to pay it forward.

Do I look like a proud Mom, or what?

November 25, 2006

Thanksgiving was fabulous!  Katie did a beautiful job with her first Thanksgiving dinner, prepared by herself, and everything was so delicious that we ate ridiculous amounts of food in a relatively short period of time. THAT is the evidence of a well-executed holiday meal.

JR arrived looking adorably Thanksgiving-ish in his new "Woodsy Ribs" Vest.

100_5905   100_5909 100_5910

Woodsy Ribs, knit with Classic Elite "Beatrice" Merino.

Pattern from "Knitter's" magazine, Winter 2004.

My other finished knit of the weekend is the baby Marley Hat, from the "Itty Bitty Hats" book.

100_5911  Modeled by the stylish  Eva Rose...

100_5918  but actually a gift for Madeline, the newest member of our family...

100_5915

Madeline Kathrine...lovingly adopted by my nephew and his wife just two weeks ago.

It was a good Thanksgiving.

Oh, but wait....I know Grey's was primarily about Burke and Christina, but what did Addison actually say to Alex Karev to generate the look?

November 21, 2006

Did I sound a bit depressed yesterday? Blogging was my self-medication...mittens were my anti-depressant.  I have a "Heart to Hands" mitten update for you!

Since the end of last week, I have been plugging this mitten collection with a few key people in ministry that I know. I have had tremendous response from each of you that linked from other sites. I am just amazed at the simple act of kindness and the generosity of each of you that have committed to donate mittens for Pastor Angel.

As of today, from other ministry sources..... 102 pairs of mittens!

As of today, from my knitting and blogging friends....24 pairs of mittens (and several hats, as well!)

Clapping!!!!!  Smiling!!!!! Jumping up and down!!!!   I am so sure we will collect the 300 mittens needed for these Buffalo children. I just know it!  Thank you!

While I'm at it, I want you to know about two other charitable opportunities...

Oneatatime2_1   Lynda has asked for help for this California ministry. I have mailed off six hats today, Lynda!

Comfortingjennyx1 Cathy is collecting squares to do a blanket for her friend...read her story. You will want to knit a square. I'll be getting my super-wash wool this weekend.

So, along with all of those mittens in the mail, a lovely package of Nashua Handknit "Julia" came yesterday. This is wonderful, wonderful yarn. I rubbed it on my feet and my feet say, "Mmmmmm....niiiiiiiiice yarn."

100_5899

Because it's for those crazy knee socks...which I will cast on tonight after I finish the ribbing on JR's vest.

100_5902_1  That's right friends. JR will have a vest for Thanksgiving.

And, from my Secret Pal 9...

100_5900

Rowan Tapestry...I do LOVE this yarn...a wool and soy blend that is just as soft as can be, and the colors are delightful. No doubt, I can make a scarf using one of the stitch patterns from the  "365 Knitting Stitches a Year"  calender that she sent! Included was a very cute little bumble-bee tape rule. Thank you so much, Secret Pal...This is a terrific gift!

November 20, 2006

A very typical laid-back weekend... knitting, watching football, napping, reading.

I knit these...

100_5879 100_5880_1

JR read this...

100_5896  100_5897

I just thought it was funny that this is his leisure reading.

Thanksgiving is this week. Wow. I'm not sure how I feel about that... Yes, of course I'm thankful as ever, but it's going to be an unusual one for us this year.  I'm not cooking, Katie is. I've been collecting food all week from people to feed families in the city....families who would like to cook at their own homes instead of eating at a church, but do not have the resources to buy food.  That's been a neat collection....so they can be home with their families, cooking.

But when I look at all of those bags of food, it's interesting to me to see the very traditional stuff of Thanksgiving... turkeys, of course.  stuffing.  sacks of potatoes.  cranberries.  green beans (must be for the green bean casserole). pies.  Did the pilgrims have green bean casserole?

If I were cooking this year, my grocery bags would have the same kinds of things. I'm sure Katie's grocery bags will have the same things, too.

What will be different is that most of our family will not be with us. Meghan can't travel because of an early workday the next day. I'll miss her a lot. I know we get tense with one another in the kitchen, but she really is right...Yukon Gold's do make the best mashed potatoes.  Mostly, I know how she will miss just being with family...Jon J and Augie are visiting great grandma in Florida with their dad. Its hard to be away from your kids for a holiday...any day, really.

Of course, Ben is away...he will be sharing Thanksgiving with a much bigger family....his family at Freedom Village. Another mom will cook for him. And you know what I will miss the most?  Hearing him for the first time express his true thanks on Thanksgiving. Of course, we'll talk to him, but it's the seeing that is the best part.

JR's kids will be with their other family. My Mom and Dad will be with another branch of our family tree. I'll miss them, too. For years, I cooked at my house and everyone was invited...brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins... Now everyone has growing families or has moved away, and it's just different.

We will all sit down to the same foods, in different places on Thanksgiving Day. And I will be thankful for all of them. It is our families that teach us most about ourselves, you know. It's where we try out our very worst behavior and are loved anyway....

This week, I will be tutoring Katie on the fine points of making a Thanksgiving Dinner, which we will eat with an entirely different family of in-laws, who are from another country...they stuff their turkey with olives and have rice and beans and tortillas for Thanksgiving dinner. I wonder if they even think about the Pilgrims and the First Thanksgiving? But I know Katie, and I know she is determined to make her traditional dinner for all of them...because it's not Thanksgiving without stuffing and gravy and pies.. And I will be happy to be a part of this family of hers.

So, I am thankful ahead of time...for families, food, home, and God, who makes it all possible.

November 15, 2006

Okay, the Wild Thing in me is about to be unleashed...the former art major, fly by the seat of my pants, stay up all night long, paint my toenails blue part of me.

I'm going to knit these socks. I ordered the yarn yesterday from an Ebay seller.

Wildlegwarmers202  My friend Dana and I will share the yarn, and do the  socks together.  They are knee socks, they are multi-multi-colored, they have pompoms, they cost way too much money, but I love them! The pattern by Kristin Nicholas were featured in the Fall VK, and the lure was too seductive for me to ignore.  I think it's okay to do something totally impractical and just plain fun....like  knee socks with Pom Poms.  How exciting.

Do you ever knit something that is far from your norm?

November 12, 2006

I was noticing that my dog Moses seems to be a bit more shivery as the weather cools off these days. I have also been quite intrigued with dog sweaters these days.  However, I do not have a pocket sized dog. I have an 80 pound dog. Imagine knitting a sweater for Moses! That's an adult sized sweater!  If I were to knit a sweater for him, especially before I knit JR's vest, I I really would be in the doghouse.

So, I got thinking. Then I went through my closets, and hidden at the bottom of a pile, an outdated Eddie Bauer sweater, knit Nordic Fair-Isle style....complete with reindeer motif!

I didn't get a picture of it in it's original state, but I did some drawings to show you how I recycled the EB sweater and made Moses a dog sweater.

Cut away the parts of the sweater you don't need...all the parts that don't look like a dog sweater, in fact.

100_5874  100_5875

What you end up with is  this...

100_5878  Pin the flaps on the front of the sweater around the dog's chest, and then sew a seam to fit.  Next, pick up and knit a 1x1 ribbing all around the outside edge of the sweater.

100_5856

To make a belly strap, I took a sleeve, and cut out a band.

100_5863  then knit a ribbing around three sides.

100_5865  Attach the band to one side of the coat...

100_5867  And add Velcro or buttons to secure the other side.

Then, we have a dog sweater...

100_5858  100_5871

That sweater looks better on Moses than it ever did on me...which is why it's been in the back of my closet for years!

Thanks so much for your very generous support of the Mitten Collection for "Heart to Hands."  There has been a wonderful response via my networking resources and all of you, and I'm sure that we will indeed get those 300 pairs of mittens for Pastor Angel's children.  I have created a page which shares the mitten story, and will have the address to which you can mail mittens. I have also started some links to free mitten patterns. So stop by the site, and share your mitten story, or your mitten pattern link, and I'll be glad to post it with the others.

You can link to the Mitten Page by clicking on the image to the left.

This weekend, I plan to knit. And I plan to knit a lot.  I also plan to browse around and see what you all are knitting. There are some pretty cool finished items I have noticed today....

Jess  has made some incredible Norwegian Mittens....

Elizabeth  has knit her very first mitten ever...

Estella created a very fun sweater for her "non-dog dog"

and if you would rather knit a dog on your sweater, all breed intarsia patterns are here!

Does anyone knit sweaters for cats?

November 07, 2006

Good Gracious, where do I begin?  I have been thinking alot about another swap, and since being smitten with mittens of late, my thoughts were about doing a mitten swap this winter. In my mind, I've created the blog entry, the rules, the blog button. A mitten swap, because we all love mittens, right?

Then, at the end of last week, I had the opportunity to speak to an incredible man, who leads a church in Buffalo. His name is Pastor Angel Gauthier, and he has such a heart for the children in one of the worst areas of the city. These are children without parents, and if they have parents, most are crack addicts or prostitutes, or are in jail. Many of the children are being raised by other family members. Just last week, a teenaged boy from Pastor Angel's youth program was shot on the street. Pastor Angel calls his neighborhood the "shooting gallery."  As I talked to him about the impact his ministry had in the community, with great delight he told me about the love for these kids, and how their ministry feeds them and loves on them, teaches them and provides for so many of their needs...How they bring their parents and the parents lives are changed because of the outreach of this church. He also expressed how the needs were so great. When I asked him what  we could do , he told me how they needed another 15 seat van, clothing for the children, food, finances. And he said, "we simply need mittens for the children for Christmas."

"Mittens???? Pastor", I said, "I will get you mittens."

All of Thursday, my mind was spinning and my heart was full. As I shared my thoughts with a few other people with whom I work, the excitement grew. Tim, our graphics designer, has worked with me for the past few days to create a flyer. When I thought of the mittens that would be made or purchased, I imagined that it would be so neat to include a hang tag on each pair. Contemplating the expense of said hang tags, and realizing the expense would be beyond my budget,  within minutes, Mark Aahrens, from Aahren's Graphics came into my office. I told him what I needed, and he said, "Whatever you need, it's yours."

So, today, I am launching a Mitten Collection. Not a Mitten Swap. Because there are 300 children whose hands are cold, and whose hearts need warming. And I am asking you to help.

Lynnes_ministry_blog_3

If you can make mittens or buy a pair of mittens and would care to donate them to this amazing project, I promise you, these children, and Pastor Angel who leads them, will be blessed by having one of their smaller needs met. I urge you to share in this wonderful project. Grab a blog button, and link it to this page, so we can all share the love!

Lynnes_ministry_blog_2

and then begin a "Heart to Hands" project of your own for next Christmas. You may email me for an address to which to mail your mittens and for any additional information.

I NEED MITTENS BY DECEMBER 10TH!

And you thought I was going to announce that we sold our house, didn't you?

And, we can still do a mitten swap, too.

November 06, 2006

A One Yard Fabric Swap package arrived today! Jill, you may now de-lurk!

100_5855

Isn't this the best gift?  I love that Jill included a vintage apron pattern! And, I love the fabric. Thank you so much Jill...this was a wonderful package....although, my dear husband wondered where the candy was!  By the way, Jill makes some pretty awesome things....including some really nice Nancy Bush socks that I just fell in love with!

Thank you to all of you who helped me de-stash! The last two packages will be mailed tomorrow. So, of course, what did I do? I bought more yarn. Yup. I found a site called Little Knits, who was having a great yarn sale themselves, and I bought two bags of Debbie Bliss Merino chunky yarn in Chocolate.  Hmmmm. Chunky Chocolate.

401

Price per bag? $24!!!!   And, I think I bought the last two bags. I am so excited!

I am continuing to work on JR's vest and a cabled sweater.  I also have another pair of red mittens on the needles for a secret someone.... so, no new projects with that chocolate yarn until I get that vest complete!

As the weekend passed, we did some other destashing also...And, we sold lots of stuff from the barn and the house... tables and chairs and trunks and chests and baskets and cupboards, wicker pieces and...and....    It was like "Cash in the Attic!"

Stop by tomorrow for something I am very excited to share with you....
