Happy Sunday! The best part about today? I get to feed my friends a big turkey dinner, with all of the sides, including:
Mmmmm....roasted brussels sprouts
coleslaw ( I have made this recipe for years...leaving out the peppers)
roasted garlic mashed potatoes and gravy
dinner rolls AND sweet rolls AND
When you get a turkey for $3.68, and there's no room in the freezer, you just have yourself an early Thanksgiving dinner...complete with an impromptu dried bouquet from the garden.
We love Jon and Lisa and Jipp and Rhonda...and I'm so glad they finally got to meet.
A Thanksgiving meme:
I'm always interested in knowing what other people make for Thanksgiving dinner...
1.What are the traditional favorites?
2.What new recipes will you try this year?
3.What part of the meal do you never compromise?
4.Who gets to carve the turkey?
5.Family style around the table or buffet style and everyone sits wherever there's room?
6.How many will be at your table this year?
7.Three best pies for Thanksgiving dessert?
8.Cranberry sauce...yeah or nay?
9.What time do you eat Thanksgiving dinner?
10.Favorite leftover?
Go ahead! Answer here or on your blogs....I'll be watching for your Thanksgiving meal traditions in the week ahead.
Alas we do not have Thanks Giving in Australia so I can't contribute to the menu ideas - but one question I have is "what wonderful garment from your wardrobe do you intend wearing?" Is so hot here at the moment that I cannot think of any of your lovely projects that would suit!

Lynne, of course you always have to have turkey! Our family always has fresh brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes. I like fresh cranberry sauce but my sisters like the one in the can so we have both. This year I am going to try a new cranberry sauce recipe with passionfruit in it! The turkey HAS TO BE brined and then roasted per Martha Stewart's instructions from about 8 years ago (?) And my dad always has the dubious honor of carving whether we celebrate at my house or theirs! We serve family style and this year we will have 7. There will be pumpkin pie and caramel apple pies....and one tradition we have is to go around the table and everyone says one thing that they are thankful for.

I must eat the Turkey SKIN! I never compromise. My sister tries to carve the bird with the skin on. THat is such a bummer. My father sneaks a good hunk of skin off for me and my son. MMMMMM skin. of course, the very worst part for you!

This year we will have turkey and seafood. Crab cakes and shrimp salad will grace our table along with the turkey. Our fav pies are apple, pumpkin and pecan. All nine family members will sit at our large table. We serve the food buffet style. There will be cranberry sauce, but only two members eat it. The traditional favorite is stuffing. We eat early-2pm.

1.favorites? Cranberry sauce, pecan pie, and pumpkin pie
2.new recipes? Actually, much of the menu is new this year. :) We're having some vegetarian friends over, so wheat berry risotto with butternut squash & mushrooms is the alternate main dish. It's the most notable new dish, IMO.
3.never compromise? Cranberry sauce. It absolutely has to be home made and it has to be tart. Also, any whipped cream must be homemade.
4.carve? When we have turkey, it's my job.
5.Family or buffet style? It depends. The year that we only had four people, we made a sit down dinner. Most years we have between 8 and 20 and it's buffet style.
6.How many will be at your table this year?
Um.. I think we are at 12, although it may be 12 plus us, so 14. We invite a bunch of people and sort of hold a "my family isn't near" and "I like my friends better than my family" party. Since some people do the family thing and then stop by afterward to socialize and/or for dessert, we often end up with an all day event.
7.Three pies? pumpkin, pecan, and... sour cherry.
8.Cranberry sauce? Absolutely yeah - see #3.
9.What time? When it's buffet style, it's sort of all day. We usually put food out around 1 or 2. and it stays out until 8 or 9.
10.Favorite leftover? That's a tough call. It's probably pumpkin pie for me, followed closely by turkey. For my DW, it's cranberry sauce.
